Self-Closing Box Tutorial

Well, it’s a pictorial tutorial. I always find myself stopping and starting excruciating 10 minute long videos anyway – so a still tutorial makes more sense to me.

I made this nifty little box on Wednesday. And, in order to create it, I went through several – lots – numerous videos explaining this at length. That’s right. Not my original idea.

So, I created one myself. I made a Marina Mist and Daffodil Delight box because those are my daughters school colors. She’s graduating in June from UCLA with a Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience. Happy dance!!

Here are the finished self-closing boxes –

Here is how I managed to get two of these from one sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 card stock.

Cut card stock in half to 8 1/2 x 5 1/2. All tutorials I came across, the card stock was 8 1/2 x 6. And, that half an inch didn’t do much for me, so, I changed it.

Score at 4 and 8. Rotate card stock.

Score at 1 and 5. (Sorry, blurry picture.)

Remove section where box will be adhered.

Hard to see, but I placed marks in the upper vertical score line at 2 and 6.

It should fall in the middle of the edge and first score line (at 4) and then between 4 and the last score line (at 8). Mine appears to be off for some reason, disregard.

Make vertical snips down to the those marks. These will make the bottom flaps of your box.

Take your pierce mat and a ruler and make four diagonal score lines from where you snipped perviously to the existing score lines.

This is a close up of the diagonal lines.

I did two things in this picture –

  • I folded along the score lines, all going the same way.
  • Next, I added Tear & Tape to secure the box.

For this box, I added the Daffodil Delight panels. To cut these to where they will fill exactly, start with a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 square.

Tic mark the center which is  1 3/4.

Make diagonal cuts using your paper trimmer from mark to top corner.

Bring back your box and adhere panels. It’s WAY easier to adhere these now before putting box together. (I only did one side, but using the same measurements, you can do both sides.)

Adhere side of the box first.

Fold up bottom flaps and adhere. Decorate and you’re done!!

And, just like that – you’ve made a self-closing box!

The ‘brain’ came from the retired stamp set, Pomp & Circumstance. Glad I kept it. It was from way back when.

I just thought it was quick and easy. The stamp set came from the April Paper Pumpkin, All About Everything. It was the bonus stamp set. It is awesome!

Simple elements came together to create this. Almost as if came it from the stash of ‘will use later pieces’! It just goes to show you – get creative and USE your stuff!

Great News

Today is an exceptionally special day.

First and foremost, it’s my husbands birthday.

So, H A P P Y   B I R T H D A Y   E D !!!!

Secondly, I am so honored to have become a Design Team member for Create with Connie and Mary!!!! This is my first design team submission for them. Big, big smiles!

I was nervous before I knew what I’d work with. After all, it’s my husbands birthday. And, I always make everyone cards. And, I wanted to go by the sketch.

This was a bit tricky to photograph with the Silver Foil Paper. Even embossed, it still shined beautifully!

It has lots of dimension as you can see.

The words are from the stamp set Number of Years. They were curvy, but since they are the photopolymer, they straightened out pretty good. It fit nicely into the little banner.

Well, as you can see I’ve got some party festivities to attend too. We have a fun day of celebratin’ to do!

Although, I think I’m the one who got the big gift today! These are some real talented designers over at Create with Connie and Mary. Go check them out and play along with us! You’ll be hooked before you know it!

Lol, like the cryptic title?

I found this cool sketch at Can You Case It –

I loved it. And I knew just where to go with it –

I pulled out my It’s My Party DSP and went right to this pattern. I have been itching to mimic these little asterisk symbols! I used a punch and they turned out perfectly!

Because of the layout of the sketch, I made a pocket card! It’s sort of reversed – but that’s ok! It works!

I think a gift card will just go perfect in the pocket. Hence, the sentiment! I choose to go with unisex colors to be able to use this gift card holder for whoever.

I’m a little late posting today. It’s the last day to take part in the Sale-a-Bration goodies. I had a hard time deciding what to share. I kept it simple today.

I was drawn to the colors at Create with Connie and Mary this morning –

I’ve had this idea in mind for a while using this large circle DSP from It’s My Party and adding simple stamping. I used the ‘today is last day to receive free’ Sale-a-Bration stamps set, Party Pants.

These together fit perfectly with the challenge colors.

This is just simply a lovely card!

I’ll create a few more to send out – because everyone loves to receive a card in the mail – especially to say ‘Hi’! And, with the number of sheets you get in that stack of DSP, four per pattern, I can easily make up several!

Fun Folds can be kind of tricky because it’s like reinventing the wheel. Most of these we have already seen. Except for one of the one I’m sharing today.

First off, have you ever heard of a Dutch fold? No, it’s not a new fold, but I received a swap using this fold and thought I’d share it –

Four Card Friday

Lol. I know, I’ve done ‘Five Card Friday’, but, I only had four things to share today.

Last week I was able to join another demonstrator at her classes. It was so much fun!!! As a demonstrator myself, I find that I’m always hosting classes and I never get to go and stamps for myself. This year I have decided that I need that kind of time too. So, I’ve been getting together with friends to ‘stamp and chat’ and hang out and stamp. All for me!

This was the fun! What I really liked about this class – some of the cards we made were products I have, but have not used.

This Just For You card, I was concerned that the large stamp would not stamp an even image. However, we stamped this image at the class and didn’t even use a mat under the card stock! It stamped beautifully as you can see. (This card inspired me to create this card.)

And, we even stamped the inside of the card too!!! Something I rarely think about doing.

I can not tell you how un’bear’ably cute this little guy is on this card! Once again, I haven’t used this adorable stamp set and framelits. It’s a definite go for my next Card Buffet!

You open it!

Now this card uses the pop up dies like they should be used! So it pops when you open it! How cool is that? It is a bit tricky to adhere the inside to where it ‘pops’ correctly, mine, I’m a little off. Oh well.

This is currently one of my favorite stamp sets, can you tell? I thought the adaptation was so fitting here!

This it’s My party DSP Stack is just fabulous too! I must say, when I saw it in the Occasions catalog, the price scared me off. But, after I purchased it, I found out that it was well worth it. And, you get four sheets of each pattern! So nice for creating multiple projects or classes.

Hello, Birthday Boy, Birthday Girl

This is a Sale-a-Bration set that will no longer available as of February 15. This is one of my favorites this year too! I think it’s a must have!

When I stamped my samples, I forgot to use the Stampin’ Pierce Mat – it REALLY makes a different! The image is not too sharp.

This is really a simple design using DSP and, you guess it, Metallic Foil Doilies! Tip, I cut the doily in half to get a nice placement behind the sentiment.

Five Card Friday, 2

So. Yes. Five cards. Today is my mother-in-law’s birthday, so why not feature five feminine, of sorts, birthday cards for her!?!?

This is quite sweet. This Rose Garden Thinlits is one of the best items on the new catalog. I featured it here if you’d like the details on it.

I love this one because of the sentiment. It’s perfect for anyone over the age of 29! I did add the Metallic Foil Doily to this version. Where as here, I did not. I like the doily. It adds even more emphasis on the age!

What a funny saying for these older birthdays.

I follow many bloggers. One of which, I just love her style. She recently created a challenge portion to her wonderful cards, called Pocket Sketches. I’m glad – her cards always look effortless.
